The history of Corfu

The history of Corfu island is very long & tumultuous, as many different cultures & nations sought to capture the island as their own. Their influence can be seen in every aspect of present day Corfu, from its physical appearance & historical monuments to its inhabitants' disposition & the local cuisine.

Mythical Corfu
The ancient inhabitants of Corfu were most probably descendents of the Phaeacians, Nafsika and King Alkinoos. The island has been inhabited since the Palaeolithic Era. It was originally occupied by the Eretrians and then by the Corinthians, by whom the island was named Korkyra, after the daughter of the river-god Esopos.

How to reach us?

The Olympion Village is situated on top of a hill just outside the main strip of Kavos. It is 5 miles away from the town of Lefkimmi, a place where tourists can experience the authentic lifestyle of the local people. Around the area of Kavos and the broader area of Lefkimmi, you can discover a lot of the hidden gems of South Corfu such as the secret beach (also known as Arkoudilas) - one of the few unspoiled beaches of the island.

By road:
Athens - Igoumenitsa 448 km (5hrs)
Thessaloniki - Igoumenitsa 323 km ( 3hrs)
Patras - Igoumenitsa 249 km (3hrs).
Public Transport
Athens, bus stops: Korinth, Patras, Agrinio and Arta.
Thessaloniki, bus stops: Larisa and Ioannina.

By sea:
From Igoumenitsa departures are 6 am upto 10pm. In the summer season departures are on average every quarter of an hour and the duration is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes.

By air:
Corfu Airport is connected by chater flights to most european cities.
Internal Flights are available by OLIMPIC and AEGEAN Airlines from Athens and Thessaloniki.
